A worked example

=ROUND(12.3456,2)

Returns 12.35

Keeps two decimal places and changes the stored value, so totals built on it add up to what is printed.

Where it goes wrong

ROUND changes the value; cell formatting only changes the display. A cell formatted to two decimals still holds 12.3456 underneath, and every total keeps using it.

What the exercises catch

Each of these is a wrong turn the practice exercises recognise and name. They are the misconceptions, not the answers.

  • That is the right number typed in by hand. When the freight allocation changes, B2 changes and this cell will not. Round the cell, not the value you can see in it.Round unit costs to cents with ROUND
  • That rounds to a whole number, which turns 12.3456 into 12 and loses the cents. The second argument is how many decimal places to keep, and a price list keeps two.Round unit costs to cents with ROUND

Practise ROUND

Knowing what a function does and being able to write it from memory are different skills. These close the gap.
